                        <title>2026-05-10: Observing session from the Catamount Family Center</title>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last night I was able to take advantage of the great weather and observe from the Catamount Family Center in Williston. It's very close to where I live, so it only takes me a couple of minutes to drive there. Yet the sky is reasonably dark (for suburban Williston).</p>
<p>I set up around 8:30 PM EDT, when it was still light, and observed Jupiter and Venus while I waited for it to get dark. My telescope is a 75mm Unitron refractor (F/16). Seeing was moderate on the planets. On Jupiter, all four major moons were visible in a pleasing configuration. The north and south equatorial belts were obvious with hints of some structure in the NEB at higher magnification. I did not see the GRS, but I'm not sure if it was in view at the time. The gibbous phase of Venus was visible at higher magnification, but otherwise, I don't have much to report about Venus.</p>
<p>Other highlights:</p>
<p>1. Around 9:10 PM, the International Space Station passed overhead on a highly inclined orbit with a path from south to north. I identified it using the Stellarium app on my phone. It passed almost through the zenith, near the handle of the Big Dipper, and then descended toward the NNE in the vicinity of Vega. It was similar in brightness to Jupiter (a little brighter), but not as bright as Venus.</p>
<p>2. I tried some deep sky objects, starting with M95 and M96 in Leo. I have medium-to-high confidence that I saw M96, but I'm less sure about M95 (low confidence). For some reason, the sky background appeared mottled to me, which might reflect the sky conditions at the time, since it was not yet fully dark. It might also reflect changes in my vision over the 20+ years since I last did regular observations. In any case, the mottling effect made it harder to identify faint fuzzies with confidence.</p>
<p>3. I continued with deep sky objects, moving on to M65 and M66, also in Leo. They were "faint fuzzies" but easily seen with a satisfying view. Both galaxies fit comfortably in the same FOV at 48x. I did not attempt to see NGC 3628. I did not notice the "mottling" effect as much by this time. The sky was also darker.</p>
<p>4. M13 in Her was spectacular, as always. I recall, in the past, sometimes catching glimpses of granularity in M13 with averted vision under very dark skies. I did not see that effect last night.</p>
<p>5. The main event for the evening was an observation of the brightness of SW Vir. Using my SkyAtlas 2000 to star hop to the location was straightforward, as there are some distinctive finder stars for this variable. I then switched to an AAVSO chart for my magnitude estimate: 7.5. Afterward, I looked up recent observational data for this variable on the AAVSO website and found that my estimate is right in the middle of the pack for recent estimates. That was gratifying.</p>
<p>6. I checked out the multiple start Theta Vir (it was on the way to SW Vir). I didn't know the details for the star at the time, so it was, shall we say, "a shot in the dark." I did not notice any secondary. When I looked up the numbers for Theta Vir afterward, I discovered that the main star is a spectroscopic binary with magnitudes 4.49 and 6.83. It's no surprise I didn't see that! However, there is also another component with magnitude 9.4 at a 7" separation. While theoretically possible in my instrument, that would not be an easy target for me.</p>
<p>I noticed what seemed to me to be an excessive number of satellites. I suppose this is just a statement of how long it has been since I last did any serious observing. At one point, I saw four satellites all moving in the same visual FOV. While I was trying to observe M96, a satellite passed directly over the galaxy! It was crazy!</p>
<p>I packed up around 10:30 PM. The temperature at that time was 44F.</p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi all, I was out after 1am to see the Perseids Meteor shower last night as I suspect it’s the only clear night this weekend.      I positioned my zero gravity chair to point south east to give me the best view of the sky, and laid back to look straight up.     I saw 5 Perseid’s over the course of 30 minutes between 1:30am and 2am, so a rate of only 10/hr    But the most spectacular fireball I saw was not a Perseid as it came across the southern sky and did not emanate from the Perseus radiant.     This was a large yellow fireball that was bright and long lasting.   Either a piece of space junk or a non-Perseid meteor, I don’t know which.  It happened closer to 1:30am than 2am.    </p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Finally after waiting for a hole in the clouds to see ZTF 2022/E3 I’ve visually captured the comet at 10pm tonight (Jan 30th).    I didn’t expect to see the sky at all but as I was taking the dog out the clouds were fairly thin so I could see a hazy moon with Mars just to the east and my old friend Orion… so I peeked in the other direction and I could see the North Star.   After consulting a skychart I could see that ZTF is about 12 degrees away from the pole (my estimate) and just east of the meridian.    So I grabbed my 10x50s with a 7.8 degree FOV and went 1.5 fields just east of north from the pole and there it was, forming the southeastern corner of a triangle  with SAO6401 and SAO6541.   I could see the green color, but it wasn’t as pronounced as I expected.    I think this primarily due to the moon being out as well as the thin cloud cover.    It’s not an impressive view like Neowise, so don’t have high expectations.   I could not see it naked eye, but it’s not really clear.   I also couldn’t see any tail at all with 50mm binoculars.   Tomorrow we’re supposed to have a few clear hours after sunset and I plan to set up a scope to get a better peek.    Good luck if you’re comet hunting, it’s a tough time of year but views can be had.  </p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I popped out on my deck after our company left just to have a look at the stars before the clouds rolled in and saw this.  It sort of looks like a smoke trail but I really don't know what made it.  Sorry about the horrible photo.  The only thing I had with me was my iPhone and I had to hurry before it dissipated.</p>
<p>Anyone else see this?</p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi VTAstro folks, I took advantage of the beautiful dark skies over Vermont last night to do a mini-messier marathon.   I say mini because I only bagged 48 objects and went to be around midnight, but it was fun none-the-less.   I used a 5.5" refractor(TEC140) and mostly 18, 10 and 8 mm eyepieces.    Most of the messier objects don't need a lot of magnification.   I started with M1, which was just about the hardest object to see because it wasn't entirely dark when I was looking for it.   With so much time at the eyepiece my eye was getting fatigued, and found that putting my hand over my left eye and keeping it open significantly lessoned my fatigue while actually improving my view significantly.    I was surprised at how much better globular clusters looked with both eyes open.   You could say it was an 'eye opening' experience for me (smile).     In any case, it was great fun and my neighbors facilitated my fun by turning off their lights.   I wish I had more staying power because just before going to bed, after putting the scope away,  I had to take the dog out and Scorpious was rising in the south-east and it was just gorgeous.     Doing that bunch of lower southern objects would requite me to either use a different site, or move my scope out back of my house.   The skies were unusually gorgeous last night with minimal dew and moisture in the air so nothing was dewing up.   Perfect for these kinds of objects.</p>

<p>Comet NeoWise observed from Redmond Road in Williston using a pair of Konus 20x80 Binoculars. Imaged with a Google Pixel 3 smartphone.</p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was viewing mars in a 6" APO, 1000mm,  17 days after opposition (Oct 30).   Much too bright without some filtering for me.   I was viewing at 250X (4mm televue radian) on a night of good seeing.     I tried yellow filters to no benefit, it just did not cut down on the brightness enough.   Mars is still at -2.2 mags.  A 23A did the trick for me.   With the 23A, after adjusting for the very large decrease in brightness, I could make out most major details including the polar cap, albeit very small at this point.   Most features I was seeing in an imaging setup were viewable as I studied the image.</p>]]></content:encoded>
