This image contains several dark nebula, the most prominent being Barnard 142 and Barnard 143 which make up the Barnard asterism of the 'E' in the sky. The Dark nebula are made up of dust obscuring the background star field. Barnards 'E' spans about 0.5 degrees in the sky and lies approximately 2000 light years from our solar system. The second image is annotated to see the various designations of nebula in the region.
