Another year, another rendition of the NA/Pelican Nebulae! 😀
The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) and the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070), both located in the constellation Cygnus, are two of the most iconic and frequently imaged emission nebulae.
More than just an interesting target for astrophotography, this area in Cygnus is filled with interesting objects and structures. Some of those included in this image besides NGC 7000 and IC 5070 include:
- The star clusters NGC 6996 and NGC 6997 (left side of image)
- The emission nebula IC 5068, sometimes called “The Forsaken Nebula” (right side of image)
- Numerous bright (LBN) and dark (LDN) nebulae, like LDN 935 the massive dark nebula that separates NGC 7000 and IC 5070
- The Cygnus Wall structure of the North America Nebula is at the bottom center of the image
- A few Herbig-Haro objects, hydrogen gas associated with new stars (red in color), can be seen in the image: one in the “Gulf of Mexico” region of the NA Nebula, and another few near the ridges and spires at the back of the Pelican’s head.

Darn I missed one! It's hard to keep track. Wonderful image and colors Greg, every years version is better. I have one myself to process somewhere!
Terri
@terri Thanks, Terri! I think this was a wider field than my previous attempt, so I was able to image IC 5068 with it. I imaged IC 5068 by itself at a higher fL, but after a couple of hours worth of imaging, I decided not to spend more time on it. Not really that feature-filled, although it's a nice area with all the dark nebulae and dust.
