The strange name for this emission nebula comes from the fact that it resembles the expressionist painting, “The Scream”, by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, a work symbolizing the anxiety of our human condition (or finding out a night’s images turn out to be completely unusable!). (Very interesting read in Wikipedia [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scream ] about where the inspiration for Munch’s painting came about.)
I had some fun -- and took a bit of liberty -- with the green/yellow (SHO) rendition of this nebula, so I thought I’d include it along with the (very slightly) more serious and traditional HOO image of Sh2-92. I just thought this would be fun to image.
Sh2-92 is in the constellation Vulpecula, close to Cygus, about 12,000 light years (ly) away but is visually near the SNR G65.3+5.7 (of which Sh2-91 is a part). One can imagine that poor Sh2-92 is screaming in horror as the shock wave from the incredibly large SNR bears down on it! Not to worry, however -- the SNR is more of a danger to Earth since it’s only 3,200 ly away from us.
